Starring SNL alumnus Fred Armisen and former Sleater-Kinney guitarist Carrie Brownstein, this IFC skit comedy series hits some really high points, taking place in hipster-laden Portland, Oregon. Together, Armisen and Brownstein kick around stereotypes of hipsters, feminists, animal rights activists, bike messengers, foodies, and punks in such a way that it strikes home, and in a good way. Expect several guest appearances by folks like Kyle MacLachlan, Selma Blair, Heather Graham, Steve Buscemi, Aimee Mann, and Sarah McLachlan, among others, too.
"Portlandia" made me laugh aloud a number of times, which is something executive producer Lorne Michaels' "Saturday Night Live" hasn't done in some time. Armisen and Brownstein are both versatile players, unafraid to stretch themselves in their often ridiculous roles. This series, though it's only 6 episodes, is well worthy of repeat viewings. Can't wait for season two! (IFC)
